Smart TVs Abound at CES, but Ecosystems Are Destined for War

The clouds are forming at the 2012 Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas, where dozens of smart TVs and set-top boxes are making their debuts. No fewer than six major television manufacturers — from LG to Samsung to Lenovo — are offering their own versions of what a connected TV is supposed to look like, touting proprietary app stores or latching on to the Google TV platform. Manufacturers are gearing up for what looks to be the next big consumer electronics trend. Smart TV shipments are expected to top 130 million by 2015, according to NPD DisplaySearch data, accounting for nearly half of all flatscreen TVs on the market.
